How Granite or Quartz Countertops Can Add Style To Your Kitchen

Blog originally published on April 16, 2018. Updated on September 2, 2022.

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s not only the place where food is made and served, but also a place where the family gathers and entertaining friends and family happens. The kitchen plays a large role in your home, so why not design it to your liking? One way to add a bit of modern style is new kitchen countertops. This can completely transform your space without undertaking a whole kitchen renovation.

Laminate countertops are considered outdated, and concrete countertops are rising in popularity, but what about your other options for countertop material? Here are a couple of ways adding granite or quartz countertops can spice up the look of your kitchen. For more guidance, contact the pros at Holland Kitchens & Baths in Connecticut.

The Difference Between Natural Stone Granite Countertops & Quartz Countertops

Granite is a natural stone mined from the earth. Quartz, on the other hand, is actually created through a manufacturing process that mixes approximately 95% ground natural quartz with 5% polymer resins. It is a manmade product but uses mostly quartz, a rock from nature. It is one of the hardest minerals. In general, quartz countertops cost less than granite countertops.

Marble countertops are yet another option. Unlike granite, however, marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is exposed to heightened heat and pressure. There are also wood countertops (sometimes called "butcher block countertops"), concrete countertops, and even recycled glass.

Appearance

Granite and quartz counters offer a smooth, clean, and classic look to your kitchen, making them timeless. White quartz is popular, but with a wide variety of colors and patterns to choose from, you’ll be sure to find a look to fit your kitchen perfectly.

When choosing a granite or quartz countertop, consider the edges. Pencil edges are common in kitchens but if you have small children or a small kitchen, opt for rounded edges instead.

Durability

When sealed properly, granite is resistant to staining. However, quartz is the most resistant to staining and never needs sealing! The easy cleanup is what makes them both a popular choice for kitchens, as their smooth surface makes it easy to wipe away crumbs and debris.

Although they are not impervious to damage, granite and quartz are also quite strong, scratch-resistant, and chip-resistant, making either one a durable option for your existing countertops or kitchen island.

Have a hot pan and forgot to bring out a trivet? Setting it on the countertop without damage is possible with granite! But do not try the same with a quartz countertop as quartz is not heat resistant and can be damaged. Still, the durability of granite or quartz makes them the perfect choice for everyone. From the everyday cook to the busy family household, granite or quartz make a great choice.
